Remember you don't need this to start playing. New York is also a paradise for golf lovers. This statement would have been considered mere sarcasm a few decades ago, but now the days of stolen cars dumped off of fairway, hard-as-cement tee-boxes, burned out greens, sand traps without sand and crumbling club houses are all now things of the past. Things began to turn around in 1983 when the Department of Parks and Recreation turned the operation of the golf courses to outside operators, and they really got on the fast lane when former NYC Mayor Guiliani (1994-2001) fell in love with the game. By 2000, more than 13 million dollars had been added to the city budget for the installation of new irrigation systems and other improvements to the courses. This new influx of capital helped raise the bar on golf course operators looking to renew or sign a new 20-year lease. All the newer contracts required operators to refurbish or construct new clubhouses and will have new, restored or expanded restaurant/catering facilities. What if I'm a beginner?Getting into golf is not a hard thing to do and you will find that it is a very relaxing and entertaining sport. To play the game you will simply need some clubs and some balls. Clubs come in various shapes, sizes, elements and specifications. Just remember that it is not necessary to have a complete standard set of clubs to begin playing, and you don't need to spend a lot of money to get the beginner basics. Don't fool yourself into thinking you're going to become a single-digit handicap in short order, and that you need the best clubs on the market to reach your goal. You don't have to run out and spend $1,500 for a set of clubs with the latest innovations. You can even find demo or used sets for real bargain prices and, if you decide you are serious about it, you can always decide to get new clubs as your game evolves. Don't take things too seriously and remember you're there to have some fun.
